Nutrition is the base of the CrossFit pyramid. As stated in a 2002 CrossFit journal article, “We don’t deliberately order these components but nature will. If you have a deficiency at any level of “the pyramid” the components above will suffer”.
Ok, nutrition is important, but what does that mean to me? CNCF can assist you with how many calories as well as each macro nutrients you need and when.
Calories – When you eat too many calories you will gain weight or if you don’t eat enough you hinder performance
Macro nutrients – Proteins, Fats, Carbohydrates
Nutrient timing & meal frequency – When to eat and how many times a day
Supplements – If you aren’t getting all of the nutrients you need from your diet
So how do we do this? CrossFit recommends The Zone Diet by Barry Sears, Ph.D, because it works. You can get a breakdown of what the Zone Diet is from this 2004 CrossFit Journal article or speak with one of our coaches to get an overview.
In the simplest terms, you should eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and NO SUGAR and keep your intake to a level that will support exercise but not body fat.
